Education has been a long history of humanity. But have you ever thought about what exactly education is? We all like to think of education as the academic progress of our lives. We live in an environment where we are programmed to think that education is only available in schools, colleges or institutions. In order to educate ourselves, we must go to these institutions. But schools or colleges only exist for the last 150-200 years. So is that mean we humans are educating ourselves for the last 200 years only? Hard to believe, isn’t it? Obviously education is not just 200 years old, but the system that we pursue is yes.
Academic education was created to fulfill the need for industrialization. Simply put, when industries started to take-off, there was a huge demand for skilled labour. To fulfill that need we had to have a system which can train people. So why not start training from a young age – the birth of kindergarten. Eventually, this became a very efficient way to produce more and more labours in our society. We all got easily adapted to this system and started sending our kids to schools and colleges without thinking for a second what is meant by actual education.
Today we can’t ignore the value of academic education. But who said you must be in school for effective education? Is classroom where 20-25 learners with 1 teacher really the best system for educating our kids? How many actually learn something? Does each and every kid concentrate enough, enjoy and improve?
Lacking in classroom learning
- Most learners sit passively while the teacher delivers a lecture
- No flexibility in learning topics
- Difficult for slow learners
- Teachers tend to focus more on smart kids
- Not a good option for shy kids – lack of confident to ask questions
- Easy to get distracted by naughty kids
- Embarrassments in front of all if could not finish the given task

The list may go long. The majority of kids do not share their real experience of classroom learning, but we can see that from their academic performance. If they aren’t getting satisfactory scores, then something must be wrong than just laziness. Won’t you agree?
