Celebrating Indonesian Independence Day at Jakarta Academics

On August 17, Jakarta Academics Jakarta celebrated Indonesia’s Independence Day with approximately 100 students, parents, and teachers participating in the event.

The celebration started with a flag ceremony, followed by one of the most iconic parts of Indonesian Independence Day celebrations: the traditional 17 August competitions, or “lomba.”

The atmosphere quickly became lively and competitive.

Students and parents participated in various activities, including:

• Kerupuk eating challenge
• Marble race (lomba kelereng)
• Wooden sandal race (lomba bakiak)
• Archery competition
• And several other fun activities

Although the competitions were designed primarily for fun, everyone quickly became invested in the games. There was cheering, there was competition, there was laughter, and, of course, there were some disappointments when someone lost. But that’s part of the experience.

For us, the Independence Day celebration wasn’t simply about organizing an offline event. It represented something much bigger.

Community.

Homeschooling students can have flexibility without having to sacrifice opportunities to connect with others. The flag ceremony, for example, provided an opportunity for students to participate in a meaningful Indonesian tradition.
